Sleepy Hollow

C.B. Macdonald & Seth Raynor · A.W. Tillinghast

Built on the Woodlea estate. Washington Irving’s valley, Macdonald’s templates, the Hudson at the green.

Sleepy Hollow opened in 1911 on land that had belonged to Colonel Shepard and William Rockefeller. Macdonald designed it; Raynor was on the ground. Tillinghast stretched it to 27 holes in the late 1920s. For a while the templates got lost. George Bahto and Gil Hanse put them back. The wooden walk in our photograph is the Lower — a green sitting on the water, no hurry, late light over the valley.
