Riviera

Pacific Palisades, California · Parkland · 1927

George C. Thomas Jr. & William P. Bell

Kikuyu, eucalyptus, Hogan’s Alley. The canyon has been on television since Eisenhower.

Thomas and Bell opened Riviera in 1926–27 in a barranca above Santa Monica. Ben Hogan won the 1948 U.S. Open here and two L.A. Opens; the 18th with the eucalyptus left is still called Hogan’s Alley. Kikuyu will eat a golf ball. The barranca will eat a round. Still Playing is the weather that does not stop a Saturday. The stripe is the mower doing what mowers do at noon in Pacific Palisades.
